Your Competitor Isn’t Stealing Your Bookings. They’re Stealing Your Attention.

I’ve sat in countless marketing meetings where teams spend hours discussing website traffic, conversion rates, booking engine performance and occupancy trends.

All important metrics.

But there’s one question I almost never hear asked:

How often are travelers actually considering your hotel?

Not visiting your website.

Not clicking your ad.

Not booking a room.

… But actually ✨ considering you✨.

Hospitality has spent decades measuring what happens once a traveler enters the funnel. Most hotel teams already have visibility into:

  • Website traffic
  • Conversion rates
  • Booking engine performance
  • Occupancy
  • ADR
  • RevPAR

These metrics are valuable. They help us understand performance, forecast revenue and justify investment.

What they don’t tell us is whether your hotel was part of the decision-making process before a traveler clicked.

And that’s becoming a bigger challenge.

The Journey Has Changed

The way travelers discover and evaluate hotels today looks very different than it did even a few years ago.

A guest planning a trip might:

  • Start with Google Maps
  • Ask ChatGPT for recommendations
  • Compare options on an OTA
  • Read reviews
  • Browse photos
  • Check local directory listings
  • Ask an AI assistant follow-up questions

All before ever visiting a hotel website.

By the time that traveler lands on your site, they may already have a favourite.

In some cases, they’ve practically made their decision.

That’s why I believe hospitality is facing a measurement gap.

We’re very good at measuring outcomes. We’re much less effective at measuring visibility and consideration.

A Hotel Can Be Great and Still Lose

One of the most overlooked realities in hospitality is that a hotel can do almost everything right and still lose bookings.

A property may have:

  • Excellent reviews
  • Competitive pricing
  • Strong amenities
  • A desirable location
  • A beautifully designed website
  • A great guest experience

And still lose.

Not because the hotel isn’t good enough.

Because it wasn’t visible enough.

If a traveler never encounters your property during their research process, your reviews, pricing and amenities never get the opportunity to influence the decision.

You can’t be chosen if you’re never considered.

The Click Is No Longer the Beginning

Historically, the customer journey was relatively straightforward.

A traveler searched, clicked, visited a website and booked.

Today, discovery happens across a growing number of digital touchpoints. Search engines increasingly answer questions directly. AI platforms recommend options. Maps influence local decisions. OTAs shape shortlists before a traveler ever reaches a hotel website.

The click, once the starting point of the journey, is increasingly becoming the end of it.

For many travelers, the website visit is no longer where discovery happens. It’s where they validate a decision they’ve already begun making elsewhere.

That’s a significant shift because it changes what hotels should be measuring.

Attention Creates Consideration

At a basic level, hospitality has always worked the same way.

Travelers need to know you exist before they can consider you. They need to consider you before they can select you. And they need to select you before they can book.

What has changed is where that process happens.

Today, travelers are discovering hotels across:

  • AI Search
  • Search Engines
  • Maps
  • Directories
  • Online Travel Agencies
  • Review Platforms
  • Paid Media

The hotels that consistently appear across these channels are more likely to be considered. And the hotels that are considered more often are more likely to win the booking.

It sounds simple because it is.

Yet most hospitality reporting still focuses on what happens after a traveler arrives at the website.

The Next Generation of Hospitality Measurement

Consumer behaviour changes first. Marketing catches up later.

We’ve seen it with mobile, social media and online reviews. We’re seeing it again with AI and evolving search behaviour.

Travelers are using new tools to discover, evaluate and compare options. Meanwhile, many of the metrics we rely on were built for a world where clicks were the primary signal of discovery.

Those metrics still matter.

But they no longer tell the whole story.

The hospitality industry has become exceptionally good at measuring transactions. The next challenge is understanding consideration.

Because the hotels that succeed over the next decade won’t simply be the ones with the biggest budgets or the best booking engines.

They’ll be the hotels that understand where travelers are making decisions and ensure they’re visible when those decisions happen.

For years, hospitality has asked:

“How many bookings did we get?”

The more important question may be:

“How often are we being considered?”

Because your competitor may not be stealing your bookings.

They may be stealing your attention first.
